Local Group Uses Hobby to Save Lives

When the tornadoes ripped through Atlanta in March it caused mass devastation to the city’s business sector. The fierce winds smashed windows, damaged city landmarks, and left more than 20 injured. Less than two days later a second storm came through causing uncounted damage and killing two people.

The storms came as a shock to local forecasters and emergency personnel. Victims of the storms were left stranded without power, and emergency management found it hard to get into damaged areas of the city.

Due to the current drought conditions, the Forsyth County Fire Department is urging citizens to practice safe, responsible use of fireworks while celebrating the nation’s independence on July 4.

“The extreme dry conditions Forsyth County is experiencing can certainly increase the risks associated with fireworks, so extra caution is highly recommended,” Fire Chief Danny Bowman said. “This year, we are strongly advising residents not to use fireworks at home and instead leave fireworks displays to the professionals.”

Johns Creek Millage to Remain

The Johns Creek City Council has voted to remain at the 4.7 percent millage. The council voted in favor of the rate during the June 16 meeting.

“I think it is always popular to try to do what the citizens would love to see, and that would be to put money back in the citizens pockets,” said Mayor Mike Bodker.

However the Council did make the difficult and unpopular decision to remain at the current millage.

“We have a primary responsibility to make decisions that are not just sound for today, but 15 20 years out,” said Bodker.

The Fulton County Board of Education will hold three public hearings in order to allow the public to review the proposed 2009 budget.
