ASO Offers Free Concert at Encore Park in Alpharetta

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s (ASO) 2008 Starbucks Free Parks Concert Series includes a performance at the Orchestra’s new summer home -- the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in Alpharetta.

The concert is free to the public in large part to major funding provided by the Fulton County Commission under the guidance of the Fulton County Arts Council.

ASO Assistant conductor Mei-Ann Chen will lead the concert on Thurs., Aug. 14, at 8 p.m. This event replaces the former free concert held at Wills Park.

Arts on The Creek Promotes Community Culture

In the short time that Johns Creek has been a city, it has worked to establish itself as an artistic town with professional artists and musicians calling it home – not to mention the two award-winning high schools that nurture students’ creativity.

Once again, the Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce Arts and Culture Committee will host a weekend of art, music and family entertainment at the “Arts on the Creek” festival. This is the second year the chamber has hosted such an event.

Musical McCain Coming To Suwanee

The City of Suwanee has established itself as an art town, with a constant rotation of free art exhibits, concerts and festivals, and August is no exception. The platinum-selling singer/songwriter Edwin McCain will perform a free concert at Suwanee’s Town Center Park on Saturday, Aug.16.

McCain is currently on tour to promote his just-released album, a collection of vintage R&B cover songs entitled Nobody’s Fault But Mine (Saguaro Road Records. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. with an opening act.

The scene opens in a museum, a young man and women are enjoying the Egyptian exhibit when they catch one-another’s eye. A statue in the museum comes to life taking a captive audience back in time to ancient Egypt where we meet our heroine Aida.

Live theater gives an audience the opportunity to travel to foreign places or to the imaginations of the characters on stage. The Chattahoochee Community Players (CCP) are bringing this live theater experience closer to home, when curtain opens on their production of "Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida" next week.

Trumpeter Joey Sommerville realizes just how lucky he is. He is one of the relatively few musicians who makes a living playing his instrument. Recording, commercials and the occasional voiceover are his bread and butter. Playing to a live audience, however, is when Sommerville’s incredible talent ignites a room.

“I have no complaints,” said the affable Johns Creek resident in a recent interview. “I do what I love.”

When asked how many years he has been playing his horn, Sommerville laughed and replied, “Longer than some people have been alive!”
