The final recommendations for the North Fulton redistricting have been released. The rezoning, which will take affect during the 2009-2010 school year, has been the subject of discussion and debate since mid-April when parents began meeting to give their input.
According to Fulton County Board of Education member Ashley Widener, the system received thousands of documented concerns, questions and recommendations from parents and community members. The school system conducted three community meetings in conjunction with the changes in attendance zones.
“I am appreciative of all of the time and effort that staff has put in reviewing the 2,700 comments from the community,” said Widener. “This feedback was invaluable in coming up with the proposed plan.”
Students are being re-routed to the existing schools or the new high school that is being built in Johns Creek near the intersection of State Bridge and Medlock Bridge roads. New attendance zones are being created by modifying existing zones to accommodate for the new school, and for growth in the area.
Northview was initially built to accommodate 1,850 students, but currently there are more than 2,700 enrolled. Chattahoochee High School was built to accommodate 1,650 students, but that school’s enrollment is 2,287.
The zoning plans are based on the geographic proximity and the distance traveled using available routes of transportation. Also, capacity and projected enrollment affect the zoning priorities.
Secondary criteria is based on traffic patterns travel time, and safe operation of buses. Previous school zonings are also taken into account to avoid splitting up neighborhoods.
Feeder school alignment is also considered, meaning future students would attend elementary middle and high school within the same boundaries.
The final redistricting decision will not be made until September; students will then be notified of school changes. The new high school in Johns Creek is set to open in August 2009.
“As a result of redistricting there will be three great high schools in Johns Creek. All three will meet high academic standards in AP and honors. I look forward to serving these families,” said Widener.
The final recommendation impacts the following high school attendance zones: Northview, Alpharetta, and Chattahoochee.

funny Bule and Yellow area
Doesn't the insulated light blue area & the small triangle yellow area beside that blue area looks funny? Common sense tells me that the small yellow area should be blue.
