Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle has appointed State Sen. Dan Moody (R-Johns Creek) to be the chairman of the Senate Education Funding Mechanisms Review Study Committee. Cagle touts Moody's strength and dedication.

“Senator Moody will lead the Education Funding Study with strength as chairman,” said Cagle. “He is dedicated to his constituents and has worked diligently in the Senate. I look forward to seeing the results this study panel produces for our state.”

The study panel will meet this summer to take a comprehensive look at the way Georgia’s system of public education is funded and could recommend new legislation for the 2009 session.

The committee was created by Senate Resolution 1213, and will examine the Quality Basic Education (QBE) funding formula, which has been the mechanism for state funding of Georgia’s public schools since 1985. Due to the complex nature of these funding mechanisms, including the QBE formula, capital outlay, equalization grants and more, the study panel will conduct a periodic review to see that they are meeting the current needs of Georgia’s schools and students.

“As the former Senate Education chairman, Moody has shown that he’s very knowledgeable when it comes to the way education is funded in our state,” said President Pro Tem Eric Johnson (R-Savannah). "He has a solid track record in the Senate, and I am confident that he will be an asset to this important study."

The Senate Education Funding Mechanisms Review Study Committee will be chaired by Sen. Moody, and includes Sens. Johnson, Dan Weber (R-Dunwoody), Jack Hill (R-Reidsville) and David Adelman (D-Atlanta). The Committee will make a report of its findings, with proposals for any new legislation by Dec. 31, 2008.
