The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has recommended funding for Forsyth County’s Land and Water Conservation Grant application in the amount of $100,000. The grant funding would benefit Ducktown Park.
One additional approval, from the National Parks Service, is still required before receipt of the grant is confirmed.
“We have made the first round of cuts for the grant, but still need final project approval by the National Parks Service,” said Forsyth County Grants Administrator Nancy Smallwood. “We are certainly hopeful and optimistic that we will receive this grant for improvements at Ducktown Park. We are very appreciative of the support of Senator Jack Murphy and Chip Pearson sand Representative Mark Hamilton, along with Boy Scout Troop 62, Forsyth County AARP and Forsyth County Community Connection who all have pledged their support of this project.”
The grant would go toward rehabilitation of the park and help fund a handicapped accessible restroom facility, along with passive recreation activities such as horseshoe pits, picnic pavilion, sand volleyball area and soft surface walking trail. The Ducktown Community Club donated the park land to the county in July 2005.
