David Poythress
Insider Advantage, a Georgia polling and news organization, is reporting that David Poythress will announce Monday that he’s a Democratic candidate for governor in 2010.
Poythress is expected to make the announcement is the annual conference of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia at Jekyll Island.
Poythress formerly served as Georgia’s Secretary of State and as Commissioner of Labor, and most recently as Adjutant General – the commander of the Georgia National Guard.
Poythress was first appointed to the military post by former Gov. Roy Barnes, a Democrat, and was reappointed by Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue, who promoted him to lieutenant general in 2006, making Poythress the first three-star general in the history of the Georgia National Guard.
Poythress would be the first Democrat to announce for the 2010 race.
Currently, the only other declared candidate for the 2010 governor's race is Republican John Oxendine, Georgia's Insurance Commissioner.
