Submitted by lydia.senn on Mon, 03/03/2008 - 22:07.
It's time for the Special Pops Special Olympics tennis academy to begin! This year's program begins Saturday, March 29 through May 17, 2:30p.m. to 4p.m. at Wesleyan School. Anyone eight years or older is invited to play, and all levels of players are welcome. The purpose is to have fun, make friends and meet volunteers, and prepare for the 2008 Special Olympics Summer Games competition, May 30- June 1, the weekend.
Interested athletes should wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle, regular tennis shoes and a smile! Rackets will be provided if needed and there is no cost for the program.
Volunteer are needed- The program is 100 percent volunteer operated and I have begun soliciting community volunteers to help provide the one-on-one instruction that we strive for. Tennis experience is helpful but not required. Just comfortable clothing, regular tennis shoes, a positive attitude are needed. Siblings, friends, and others are welcome to help us with the program. The Special Pops program qualifies for community service time in all local school programs like Jr. Beta. I will sign volunteer forms at the end of each practice.
Practice format-The Special Pops Tennis Academy will operate as we have done in the past. Practice will consist of warm-up, conditioning, skills training, and cool down. At the end of practice, we recite the Special Olympics motto and make a cheering tunnel to close practice.
